Inaccessible hardware wallet: preserve useful clues

An old hardware wallet may preserve useful clues. Record its model and public references before resetting it, and keep signing secrets private.

Materials and assets are two different things.

A hardware wallet is used to protect signing credentials. Assets are tracked on the corresponding networks, not stored like coins inside the device. So a screen failure does not demonstrate their disappearance. It also does not guarantee that access remains possible. Note the manufacturer, model and period of use without photographing secret information.

Avoid irreversible manipulation

Before you reset or multiply trials, check the official documentation of the manufacturer. Error attempts can result in deletion depending on the device. Do not connect the hardware to any software received in a private conversation. Check the origin of the application and do not enter a recovery phrase in a site that promises to test the balance.

Reconstructing associated accounts

Search for old account names, networks and public addresses in your history or withdrawal confirmations. Several apps may have been used to scan the same device. An empty app does not automatically mean that all addresses are empty. The creation date and the networks used help distinguish a new configuration from an old account.

Preparing a non-secret technical description

Example: Indicate that the device is booted but the screen remains unreadable, with the model and last known use. Add a withdrawal reference if you have one. Do not send a PIN or secret backup. This description distinguishes a hardware problem from a history search, before deciding whether an official diagnosis or procedure is appropriate.
